THE PRODUCT NAME
MAY CHANGE BUT
THE MOTIVE
REMAINS.

Mechanics & Motives is a field guide to the recurring needs, loops and incentives behind products people use, buy, play and share.

It starts with a simple observation: the surface changes faster than the motive. A pixel homepage, an NFT plot, a battle pass, a to-do app and a supermarket end cap can look unrelated. Underneath, they may rely on the same tools—scarcity, status, progress, ownership, interruption, ritual or fear of loss.

Each essay asks four questions:

  1. What’s the product?
  2. How does it work?
  3. What’s the mechanic?
  4. Where else does it appear?

The aim is not to celebrate manipulation or reduce people to predictable buttons. It is to make product design more legible: useful when it supports autonomy, competence and connection; worth questioning when it turns anxiety, pressure or confusion into a business model.
